I have the pleasure of travelling with different families worldwide, either on business trips, weekends away or family vacations. Now lockdown restrictions are slowly lifting, families may start to travel again.

Travelling with your little ones for the first time can be stressful, let alone thinking of what to pack. So here are a few of my top items which I have found to be useful when travelling. These items are not essential, but can make travelling with little ones that much easier. All links are attached at the bottom.

1. Black Out Blind

A black out blind is perfect for keeping the light out of any room, some brands are travel friendly! This will help with jet lag and sleeping through the night. This product uses detachable velcro pads which will prevent any light coming in from the sides of the sheet. If you are sharing a room with your toddler, I have previously used a black out blind (or bed sheet) to divide the room. Preventing any early waking and night disturbances which can occur when sharing a room.

2. Snooze Shade

Protecting your child from the sun is crucial, this can be difficult if you are out and about exploring. This snooze shade can help by keeping your little one shaded and cool, placing it over your buggy or securing it over the car window. If your little one is finding it hard to settle to sleep, blocking out any distractions with the snooze shade will help.

3. Monitor

Don’t forget to pack a monitor, as it can add an extra layer of comfort with being in a new environment away from home.

4. Buggy Clips

A travel must have, travel buggies usually have a smaller storage space. Using buggy clips will help to keep your arms free, great for adding shopping and any bags/ luggage.

5. Travel Bottles

The bottles linked below are great for traveling as they are self-sterilising (with access to a microwave). Making sure your little one is comfortable/ satisfied with the teats before any travel is necessary.

6. Ready To Feed Formula

If you are using formula, when travelling I would use ready to feed formula bottles. Making feeding on the go that much easier. If you are tight on budget, there are many stackable pots perfect for storing formula powder or snacks!

7. Calpol Sachets

If Calpol is ever needed on your trip, these sachets are great for placing in your liquids bag or handbag on the go.

8. Travel Potty

Check out the potette linked below, this is a travel potty that can also be placed on the toilet, making it easier for smaller bottoms. This comes with either; a silicon bowl which is reusable, or disposable bags. Great for road trips or if they aren’t quite ready to wait until you reach the nearest toilet.

9. Travel Seat

If your little one is weaning or in need of a baby chair, this travel seat is perfect for any location being; a picnic bench, cafes, restaurants, changing room bench (after swimming, keeping them dry whilst you get changed), Trains (allowing them to play happily with the use of a table). Making traveling slightly more comfortable for them and easier for you.

10. Extension cable

When travelling I would pack an extension lead, allowing everyone in the family can have access to a charging point if necessary. Meaning you don’t have to pack 10+ adaptors!

How do you feel with the lock down rules adjusting? Are you classed as high-risk and still shielding? Or are you waiting by the door ready for those pubs to open? The support and sense of community through social media/ technology during this pandemic, has been truly remarkable. I have seen families supporting each other in all sorts of ways, not only emotionally but by sharing their own experiences helping with daily struggles. For example; home schooling, the heat wave, tantrums, lack of sleep, G+T recipes and welcoming babies’ home to this ‘new normal’.

Thousands of babies have been born during lockdown, with not only the worries all mothers would face when giving birth. But the added stress of Covid, possibly only a few walls away. Mumma’s having limited support only via technology, hours or maybe days in labour. With fathers or close family members anxiously sitting in the hospital car park waiting for ‘the call’.

To those families who have had babies during lockdown, this blog is to you. You’re incredibly strong even if you may not feel like it. Now it’s time to spend it resting and nesting, at least that’s one thing lockdown will make sure of. When you feel the time is right, reach out to other families who might be going through similar experiences, talk to your friends or contact me. Enjoy your 'new normal' that being parenthood and the joys that it brings.

A shout out to my niece and nephew being born only a few weeks ago, with another niece on the way and a close friend expecting number 2.

Can I put sunscreen on my baby who’s under 6 months? It is recommended that babies under 6 months are not exposed to direct sunlight, especially during the hours between 11-3pm (NHS). If your baby is exposed to direct sunlight and no shade is available. They should be wearing a thin layer of sunscreen, with full coverage to the areas exposed. Whilst making sure they are wearing UV protective clothing to cover the larger areas of the body.

So, what sunscreen should I use? The SPF factor is crucial as it measures the amount of UVB protection it provides. Whilst also looking out for the amount of stars on the product, this shows the level of UVA protection. Using creams which are SPF 50+ and preferably waterproof, preventing it from washing off with water or dribble. Do a patch test on your babies skin a day before applying.

When should I apply sunscreen? Applying 30 minutes before your child is exposed to sunlight will give the cream enough time to set and work its magic. Setting timers on your phone to make sure you are reapplying evenly throughout the day.

When writing this blog I noticed I call it sun cream and not sunscreen... What do you call it ?
