Can I put sunscreen on my baby who’s under 6 months? It is recommended that babies under 6 months are not exposed to direct sunlight, especially during the hours between 11-3pm (NHS). If your baby is exposed to direct sunlight and no shade is available. They should be wearing a thin layer of sunscreen, with full coverage to the areas exposed. Whilst making sure they are wearing UV protective clothing to cover the larger areas of the body.

So, what sunscreen should I use? The SPF factor is crucial as it measures the amount of UVB protection it provides. Whilst also looking out for the amount of stars on the product, this shows the level of UVA protection. Using creams which are SPF 50+ and preferably waterproof, preventing it from washing off with water or dribble. Do a patch test on your babies skin a day before applying.

When should I apply sunscreen? Applying 30 minutes before your child is exposed to sunlight will give the cream enough time to set and work its magic. Setting timers on your phone to make sure you are reapplying evenly throughout the day.

When writing this blog I noticed I call it sun cream and not sunscreen... What do you call it ?

All the best,
